Draagvlak

A series of 3D woven bags that are constructed only by cutting, washing or heating the fabric. The bags are constructed out of multilayed, square shaped weaves. This technique minimalizes secondary production steps (such as sewing or pattern printing), production waste and shipping space because of the flat and square shape of the fabric before construction. New materials such as shrinking yarn and melting yarns are used in creating the shapes.

Totebags on Arm loom

The tote bag is handwoven on an arm loom with a very dense cotton warp in pointed threading. This backpack has a very simple construction: a single layer ‘seam’ at the bottom, splitting up into two layers to create a tube and ending again in a single layer to ‘seam’ the straps. With three simple cut the pocket is created and a few additional melting yarns in the warp are used to ‘seam’ the sides of the pocket. The sides are cut open to create the straps.

Backpacks on Staubli dobby loom

These two sample backpack are woven on a Staubli dobbyloom using a blocked or al- ternating warp. The backpack started as a single layered weave, splitting up into two layers without blocks, creating the ‘sack’ , after that the alternating blocked pattern was used to create the straps. The straps are attached to the bottom by using a melt- ing yarn from Bart & Francis.
